CHILDREN'S MINISTRY NEWS September 2005
Hola amigos, Greetings from Nicaragua. It is very beautiful here in the mountains. In the morning when the clouds hover over the tops of the mountains they are so close they look like I could reach up and touch them. The children are even more beautiful. There are twenty children, twelve boys and eight girls. They are very affectionate, and I am enjoying getting to know each and every one of them. There is another teacher here from the states, and we are sharing the duties of teaching and caring for the children. I thought you might like to know what my daily schedule is like, so here goes. The children wake up and get ready for school at 5:30 a.m. I wake up at the same time. Morning devotions are at 6 a.m. and are led by one of the children. Breakfast is at 7 a.m., and usually consist of beans and rice. At 8 a.m. we walk the children to school which is less than a block from the orphanage. After the children are safely in school, I help the cook clean the kitchen from breakfast. From 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. I am free to clean my room, do laundry, take care of paper work, and sometimes relax for a few minutes. We pick up the pre-schoolers at 11:45 a.m., and after they change into their play clothes we teach them English and computer until 12:45 p.m. when it is time to pick up the other children from school. We have lunch at 1:00 p.m.. School is not taken very seriously here. If a teacher is not there to teach for whatever reason, the children in that class do not go to school that day. This happens a lot. The orphanage makes up for this by hiring a tutor to come from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.. This is also when Lianne, the other teacher, and myself teach English and computer. We take the children out of their regular tutoring in small group for thirty minutes. We have dance class or soccer practice at 5:00 p.m., and dinner is at 6:00 p.m.. I usually play with the children after dinner until their bedtime around 8:00 p.m.. This has been my schedule up to this point, but it will likely change because of a major change in the orphanage this month. The house parents who have been here for almost three years are leaving and Lianne and I are being put in charge. This will be much more responsibility and I expect to be much busier in the future. Please pray • That God will give me wisdom to handle any problems that arise • That He will comfort the children who are very sad about the current parents leaving. • That I will learn Spanish quickly. (I know a little, but I need to learn much more to effectively care for the children.) • That I will have a good relationship with the staff here whom I will be overseeing. Thank you for your prayers, and know that I am praying for you as well as you recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
